Acute Multidimensional Poverty: A New Index for Developing Countries

An international measure of poverty for 109 developing countries put forward by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Intiative, the MPI incorporates income-based poverty measures by reflecting the multiple deprivations that people face at the same time (which gives a more realistic view of poverty and the deprivations that they face at a household level).

The MPI identifies disparities across health, education and living standards, and shows the amount of people who are multidimensionally poor and the deprivations that they face.

The next five years provide a narrow window within which to draw on these lessons, and accelerate progress in the 30 high-burden countries that account for eighty per cent of under-five deaths. In a world where a global economic downturn is squeezing households, government budgets and aid for the poorest countries, the limited progress that has been made is now threatened. This report sets out an agenda for meeting that challenge.
